The room it occupies, formerly used as the chapel, in the old gaol, a building now used as auxiliary Government offices. 47 Under the care of the first appointed curator, government analyst Bernard Henry Woodward, the museum was comprised of geological material amassed by the government geologist of the time Henry Page Woodward (1887-1895), and the collections acquired from the Fremantle Geological Museum, Western Australia’s first public museum, founded in 1881 by Charles Grendell Nicolay.48 Additional geological collections were acquired from former government geologists Henry York Lyell Brown (1870-1872) and Edward Townley Hardman (1883-1885), mineralogist Dr Ferdinand von Sommer, the Gregory Brothers, and four special collections of minerals exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1878, the Melbourne Exhibition in 1881, the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London in 1886, and the Mining and Metallurgy Exhibition held at the Crystal Palace in London in 1889.49 Western Australia’s first museum was a product of its imperial colonial times.
