Children need to develop an understanding of and an appreciation for their physical and cultural environments and to consider how resources will be allocated in the future. For every state, there needs to be a change in how they teach about Indians. The central issue of this curriculum debate is addressed directly in this chapter, but hopefully, in a less contentious, more judicious manner. This year I had the honor of watching the eighth grade students at the school I teach at receive their eagle feather (for the boys) or plumes (for the girls) at a ceremony at the end of the school year.

Fixed-response testing cannot assess students' ability to function as a competent participant in society. Resources that might have been directed to assisting teachers to become better decision makers have instead been channeled into a program dedicated to the development of schemes for preventing teachers from making curricular decisions.
