Though the scrolls generally do confirm the Masoretic text, they also reveal spelling and word variations or missing lines that are used to clarify biblical text. What this rumination all means, of course, is that Christianity is, as I contend in my books, largely unoriginal, representing not fresh and new “divine revelation” but, again, the amalgamation of not only the ideas of the Zadokite authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls but also influences from the Essenes, Jews, Samaritans and many others.

The original caves at Qumran were found by shepherds of the Ta'amireh Bedouin tribe. Of the eleven caves that yielded manuscripts, five were discovered by the Bedouins and six by archeologists. Jewish, Persian, Iranian and Hellenistic thoughts apparently competed with one another in a quagmire of Messianic fervor, banditry and zealous terrorism. These scrolls were written on animal hide or papyrus and contained three types of material: copies of the Hebrew Scriptures, works from what scholars call "apocrypha" or "pseudepigrapha," and documents pertaining to the Qumran community itself.
