The European Council of Jewish Communities coordinates Jewish organizations in 35 countries throughout Europe. Jews are not merely bound by religious beliefs, they are mishpacha, family, and the family ties exist perpetually and are not given to be broke by rhyme nor reason. Consequently, a number of other core tenets of the Pharisees' belief system (which became the basis for modern Judaism), were also dismissed by the Sadducees. (The Samaritans practiced a similar religion, which is traditionally considered separate from Judaism.) Like the Sadducees who relied only on the Torah, some Jews in the 8th and 9th centuries rejected the authority and divine inspiration of the oral law as recorded in the Mishnah (and developed by later rabbis in the two Talmuds ), relying instead only upon the Tanakh.

The Catholic church has been the subject of much criticism for its role in the holocaust. I tend to read up on what other people are, in order for me to better understand certain aspects (thus is why I have a couple of Mormon books in my already-read list). To some degree, these doctrinal differences have created schisms between the Jewish denominations. Hebrew festivals also have no mythological basis; they either celebrate God’s bounty (e.g., at the ingathering of the harvest) or his saving acts (e.g., at the festival of unleavened bread, which is a memorial of the Exodus).
